The Lego Movie marketing campaign was so successful because of the number of audiences the advertising targeted. For example: the adverts recreated in Lego were originally adverts which adults would see and therefore targeted them, the Lego sets found in stores were meant to attract small children who played with Lego and the videogame was created in advertisement for slightly older children who played videogames. Since there was such a large range of an audience, the movie attracted a lot of people to watch it in the cinema. This would have generated free press on the movie as it was a world first, no one had ever done this before and since so much press would be on these adverts, more poeple would watch them and therefore more people would be inclined to watch the movie.
Synergy in marketing is when two media projects create a larger sum together than they ever would have done independently.
The Lego Movie used synergy in the form of the movie and the videogame to advertise both, as there would be movie-goers who don't play games who may play the game of the movie they watched and vice-versa for the gamers. The game and movie had the same plot, characters and theme, this means that the audiences are getting the same experiences even though they're on different platforms. This would attract the gamers to the movie and the movie-goers to the game.
A film company would want to release a videogame to tie-in with a film because the game would advertise the film and the film would advertise the game so people who experience one would be more likely to experience the other and therefore both medias would gain a larger total and so synergy exists.
Many relevant points, well done. TARGETS:
ReplyDelete- Expand your point about the Lego ad break to show you understand it was a world first that would have generated free press which in turn would have made more people want to see the advert and thus potentially see the film too.
- Give more details concerning what aspects of the adverts would have attracted the audience e.g. in the game what similar characters, narrative and mise-en-scene were used and why would this sell the film by representing the target audience?
