Matrix And Lego Movie

Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the intertextual relationship between The Matrix and The Lego Movie (10).

The positive aspects of the Lego Movie taking the ideas for the setting from The Matrix is that The Matrix was a very successful movie which had quite an interesting setting (being that the world we know is just a simulation). The lego Movie took this idea and so the setting there was that the Lego world was just a place for "The Man Upstairs" to create to satisfy his need of order. These two ideas are fairly similar so there perhaps is a risk of copyright  however these worlds are a bit too different to copyright so the Lego Movie could get away with this.
The narrative of both movies are very similar, being that a normal guy is a part of a prophecy but due to his lack of power he's doubted by everyone except the "Wise Old Man/Mentor" character. The heroes suffer a great loss and go into hiding, the main character "dies" and when they come back they have the ability to change the world around them. These two plots are very similar and so although the plots work well, The Lego Movie could be sued for copyright over this and so They're lucky that they weren't.
The characters are also very similar with a few exceptions between movies: Emmet is Neo, a nobody who's suddenly dragged into the fight; Vitruvius is Morpheus, the character who supports the main character with knowledge and being wise; Wildstyle is Trinity, the love interest for the main character who at first doesn't believe in him; Bad Cop is Agent Smith, the scary bad guy who's a constant trouble for the heroes. With these characters being so similar, it's clear that the Lego Movie took the ideas from The Matrix, although this may please children, Matrix fans may have mixed opinions about it, some may like that The Matrix has influenced The Lego Movie however some may be furious about The Matrix being copied.
